We exist through relationships – we are born into them, shaped by them and ultimately, healed by them.

Our Philosophy

Our philosophy is all about building real connections and staying true to the 8 commitments of an I-Thou Relationship. Whether we’re working with people or horses, the way we connect doesn’t change.

But what exactly is the I-Thou Relationship?

It’s about truly seeing, hearing and experiencing someone as a real person, rather than an object or just another case to “fix.” There’s no agenda – just acceptance, trust and genuine connection. It means listening beyond words, recognizing unspoken emotions and acknowledging the deep human need to be understood. At its core, this concept is built on the idea that we exist through relationships — we are born into them, shaped by them and ultimately, healed by them.

The 8 commitments to an I-Thou relationship come from Gestalt therapy principles and Martin Buber’s philosophy. They help guide authentic, deep and meaningful connections. Here they are:

Presence

Being fully present with the other, not distracted or preoccupied. This means actively listening and engaging in the moment.

Acceptance

Seeing and accepting the other as they are, without trying to change or "fix" them.

Mutuality

Recognising that both in the interaction have value and bring something important to the relationship.

Authenticity

Being real and honest in the interaction, rather than putting up a front or playing a role.

Non-judgment

Suspending judgment and avoiding labels, allowing space for the other to be fully themselves.

Empathy

Truly understanding and feeling with the other person, even beyond what they express in words.

Trust

Trusting in the natural process of connection and transformation, rather than forcing outcomes.

Respect for Otherness

Acknowledging and valuing the uniqueness of the other, rather than seeing them as an extension of yourself or a means to an end.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) plays a huge role in the I-Thou Relationship because it’s all about understanding, managing and navigating emotions — both our own and those of others.

When we practice presence, empathy and non-judgment, we develop key EQ skills like self-awareness and emotional regulation. These allow us to build deeper, more authentic relationships. Whether working with people or horses, high emotional intelligence helps us communicate, connect and foster trust without relying solely on words.

By staying committed to the 8 principles of the I-Thou Relationship, we create a space where real transformation can happen — where people and horses feel truly seen, heard and valued.
