Equine-Assisted Learning Emotional Intelligence Program

The Equiman Leadership Emotional Intelligence program offers an experiential pathway into practical emotional intelligence and deeper self-understanding. Through equine-assisted learning, you begin to recognise the patterns, reactions and emotional habits you may have carried for years, often without realising it.

Rather than learning through theory alone, you explore emotional intelligence through lived experience. As you interact with horses, you notice what happens in your body, your breath, your emotions and your behaviour in real time.

Because horses respond to subtle shifts in body language, emotional state, pressure and internal tension, they often bring awareness to patterns you may not consciously recognise.

In this way, learning becomes practical, embodied and relevant across both personal and professional contexts.

The Equiman Congruence Model™

The Equiman Congruence Model™ shapes how we design and facilitate our equine-assisted learning programs and private sessions.

This published framework supports embodied emotional intelligence, relational awareness and personal congruence. It explores the relationship between your internal state, your external behaviour and what becomes visible through relational feedback.

In the paddock, this means learning unfolds through simple, grounded moments with horses. You begin to notice how you respond, where you feel pressure, what patterns emerge and what becomes possible when you remain present, regulated and honest.

Each workshop within the program offers a practical way to experience emotional intelligence in action. The full program combines one Full-Day Foundation Workshop with three focused Half-Day Workshops, allowing learning to develop progressively over time. Additional private 1:1 sessions may also be provided where individual support, deeper exploration or integration would be beneficial.

Depending on individual or organisational needs, participants may engage with the full program, attend a standalone workshop where appropriate, or begin with a private 1:1 session.

Before participating, each person completes a Readiness Questionnaire. This helps identify the most appropriate and supportive starting point for that individual. In some cases, a participant may be invited to begin with one or more private 1:1 sessions before joining the group program, allowing them to build the grounding, regulation or confidence needed to engage safely and meaningfully in the shared learning environment.

Entry Point Options

The following options provide different ways to begin or engage with the work:

Full-Day Foundation Workshop
The full-day workshop offers a deeper exploration of emotional awareness, behavioural patterns and relational presence, and provides the foundation for the full development program.

Three Focussed Half-Day Workshops
Self-Regulation, Awareness and Boundaries build progressively on the foundational work, with each workshop exploring a different aspect of emotional intelligence and its practical application.

Private 1:1 Sessions
Private sessions offer a personalised space for those who wish to explore individual or professional themes in greater depth, begin the work privately, or support integration following a workshop or program.

This is emotional intelligence development through presence, reflection and real-time relational feedback.

EAL Private 1:1 Sessions

Private sessions provide a personalised setting for focussed emotional intelligence development.

For some participants, the Readiness Questionnaire may indicate that individual sessions are the most appropriate starting point before group participation. For others, an individual pathway may remain the more suitable format.

Sessions may support the development of grounding, emotional regulation, boundary awareness and confidence, or provide space to explore a specific professional or personal challenge, strengthen leadership or relational awareness, deepen learning between workshops, or support integration following a program.

Each session combines structured facilitation with space for individual exploration. Participants are supported to experience and recognise emotional patterns, responses under pressure and embodied awareness as they occur.

Through this process, participants may begin to recognise the relationship between what is experienced internally, how that is expressed externally and what becomes visible through the horse’s relational feedback.

Sessions are available on weekday mornings between 8:00am and 12:00pm.

EAL Full-Day Foundation Workshop

The full-day Foundation Workshop – Emotional Intelligence From A Mirrored Perspective – established the experiential and conceptual base for the development work that follows.

Participants are introduced to the ways thoughts, assumptions, emotional responses and behavioural patterns can influence how they communicate, relate and respond under pressure. The workshop creates space to recognise patterns that can be difficult to notice within the pace and demands of everyday work and life.

This is a day of experiential learning and deeper self-awareness. At times, the work may feel tender or confronting as participants encounter habits, protective responses or patterns that may ordinarily remain outside conscious awareness.

In this work, the “mirror” is not the horse’s behaviour. Rather, it is what participants may begin to recognise about their own thoughts, assumptions, projections and responses through the interaction.

The learning is approached slowly and with care, allowing participants time to reflect, experience their responses in real time and develop greater awareness of what may be occurring internally and relationally.

The day includes both structured learning in the classroom and time in the paddock with the herd. Through this combination of reflection, somatic experience and relational feedback, participants may gain:

Participants may leave with greater clarity, steadiness and self-trust because the learning has been experienced directly, rather than understood only conceptually.

This workshop is designed to develop greater awareness, understanding and choice in how participants respond, communicate and relate to others.

EAL Half-Day Focussed Workshops

After laying the foundation, the half-day workshops move into focussed development across specific areas of emotional intelligence, allowing participants to explore and practise these capabilities in greater depth.

They are designed to build on the Foundation Workshop as part of a broader developmental pathway, while allowing flexibility in entry and progression according to participant readiness and organisational needs.

1 - Self-Regulation

Explore what happens within you when pressure, uncertainty or emotional activation arises. Learn to recognise your own early signs of stress, understand what helps you return to a more regulated state, and practise maintaining greater steadiness and presence in real time.

Working alongside the horses provides immediate feedback about subtle changes in tension, energy, pace and intention — helping self-regulation become something you can recognise and practise, rather than simply understand in theory.

2 - Awareness

Develop greater awareness of what is happening within you and around you before habitual reactions take over. Explore the relationship between thoughts, emotions, body sensations, assumptions and behaviour, and begin to recognise patterns that may influence the way you respond to people and situations.

Through interaction with the horses, participants practise slowing down, observing more accurately and distinguishing what is actually happening from what they may be assuming, anticipating or projecting.

3 - Boundaries

Explore how you recognise, establish and communicate boundaries with clarity while remaining open and connected to others. Notice what happens when boundaries become too rigid, too porous or unclear, and how pressure, discomfort or the desire to maintain harmony can influence the way you respond.

Working with horses provides a practical environment for experiencing personal space, pressure, choice and mutual respect, allowing participants to practise boundaries that are clear without becoming forceful or defensive.

Each workshop is experiential, spacious and guided with steady support.
