Our Philosophy

We exist through relationship

We are born into relationship. We are shaped by relationship and often, it is through relationship that we begin to see ourselves more clearly.

At Equiman Leadership, emotional intelligence is not treated as an idea to understand intellectually. It is something you experience through your body, your behaviour, your choices and the way you relate under pressure.

That is why relationship sits at the centre of our work.

Whether we are working with people or horses, the way we connect matters. We value presence, honesty, respect and emotional safety. We do not approach people as problems to fix. Instead, we create conditions where awareness can emerge, patterns can become visible and new choices can become possible.

The Philosophical Framework

Equiman Leadership is informed by the Equiman Congruence Model™, a published functional systems model developed by me.

The model gives structure to the philosophy behind our work.  It explores how people regulate, distort and integrate experience through the relationship between internal state, external behaviour and the relational field.

In simple terms, this means we pay attention to what is happening within a person, how that inner state is expressed outwardly and what becomes visible through relationship.  When there is a gap between what a person feels, what they believe, what they communicate and how they behave, incongruence arises.  This may show up as tension, avoidance, control, people-pleasing, unclear boundaries, emotional shutdown or overthinking.

Through safe relational feedback, these patterns can become easier to notice.

The full Equiman Congruence Model™ paper is available by request and accessed under publication access terms.

The I–Thou relationship

Our relational approach is also informed by the I–Thou principle, drawn from Martin Buber’s philosophy and reflected in Gestalt-informed practice.

An I–Thou relationship means meeting another being as real, whole and worthy of respect. It means we do not reduce a person, or a horse, to an object, a role or a problem to solve.

In this work, the I–Thou stance supports the conditions required for meaningful learning. It invites presence, acceptance, mutuality, authenticity, non-judgment, empathy, trust and respect for otherness.

These commitments guide the way we facilitate, the way we work with horses and the way we support participants in moments of vulnerability, uncertainty and insight.

The 8 commitments to an I-Thou relationship.

Presence

Being fully present with the other, not distracted or preoccupied. This means actively listening and engaging in the moment.

Acceptance

Seeing and accepting the other as they are, without trying to change or "fix" them.

Mutuality

Recognising that both in the interaction have value and bring something important to the relationship.

Authenticity

Being real and honest in the interaction, rather than putting up a front or playing a role.

Non-judgment

Suspending judgment and avoiding labels, allowing space for the other to be fully themselves.

Empathy

Truly understanding and feeling with the other person, even beyond what they express in words.

Trust

Trusting in the natural process of connection and transformation, rather than forcing outcomes.

Respect for Otherness

Acknowledging and valuing the uniqueness of the other, rather than seeing them as an extension of yourself or a means to an end.

From Philosophy To Practice

This philosophy shapes every Equiman Leadership workshop, course and private session.

In the paddock, learning happens through real moments. You may notice a breath, a hesitation, a reaction, a boundary, a pattern of control or a moment where you abandon yourself to keep the peace.  Rather than judging these responses, we explore them with curiosity and care.

The aim is not to become perfect. The aim is to become more aware, more regulated and more congruent, so the way you show up externally begins to better reflect what is true internally.

This is emotional intelligence in action.
